Food in Botswana

Botswana’s food scene is straightforward, meat-centered, and tied to routine. In Gaborone, restaurants and local spots serve dishes focused on beef, sorghum, and maize, often prepared simply to highlight core ingredients. Street food is present but less dominant than in other regions, with more emphasis on sit-down or takeaway meals that reflect home-style cooking. In rural areas, the food scene becomes even more consistent, with limited variation and strong reliance on staple foods. Cooking methods are practical, and meals are designed to be filling rather than experimental. There’s little separation between everyday food and what might be served in a restaurant. The experience is defined by reliability and familiarity, where the same dishes anchor daily life across settings.
