Food in Croatia

Croatia’s food scene is split along geography, with coastal and inland regions offering noticeably different experiences. Along the Adriatic, seafood dominates, with grilled fish, olive oil, and Mediterranean flavors shaping the menu. Inland, the food becomes heavier and more Central European, with meats, stews, and baked dishes taking over. In cities like Zagreb, both influences coexist, giving the food scene a mixed identity that shifts depending on where you eat. Restaurants range from casual taverns to more polished coastal dining spots, especially in tourist-heavy areas. Meals are typically sit-down affairs, with an emphasis on pacing and shared dishes. Street food exists but plays a smaller role compared to restaurants. The result is a food culture that feels divided but complementary, where location determines not just what you eat, but how the entire experience unfolds.
