Food in Egypt

Egypt’s food scene is dense, accessible, and built around a few deeply ingrained staples. In Cairo, street food and casual eateries dominate, with dishes like koshari, falafel, and ful appearing everywhere from small carts to established local chains. Meals are filling, affordable, and designed for repetition, making them part of daily routine rather than occasional indulgence. In smaller cities and rural areas, the same core dishes appear with slight variations, reinforcing consistency across the country. Restaurants exist across all levels, but even more formal settings often serve familiar foods rather than reinventing them. Bread is central, used in nearly every meal, and eating is both practical and social. The scene prioritizes volume, accessibility, and familiarity, creating a system where food is always within reach and rarely overcomplicated.
