Guatemala Food

Corn-based dishes and stews form the foundation of Guatemala’s food identity. Tortillas are constant, used alongside beans, rice, and grilled or stewed meats. Pepián stands out as a signature dish, a thick, spiced stew often made with chicken or beef. Tamales are widely consumed, wrapped in banana leaves and filled with seasoned mixtures. Plantains appear frequently, either fried or mashed, adding sweetness to meals. The structure of meals remains consistent, built around corn, protein, and a small set of core flavors.
