Malawi Food

Nsima, a thick maize porridge, is the central element of most meals in Malawi, typically eaten by hand and paired with relishes. Common accompaniments include chambo (local fish), chicken, beef, or vegetables like mustard greens and pumpkin leaves. Beans and groundnuts (peanuts) are frequently used in sauces. Usipa, small dried fish, appears regularly as a protein source. Meals are simple in structure, built around nsima with one or two sides, with variation coming from what protein or vegetables are available. The repetition of this format defines the country’s food pattern more than a wide variety of distinct dishes.
