Pennsylvania Food

Cheesesteaks, pretzels, and Pennsylvania Dutch staples define the state’s food identity. In Philadelphia, cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches dominate, built on thinly sliced meat and simple toppings. Soft pretzels appear across the state, often as a quick, everyday food. In central and rural areas, dishes like scrapple, pot pie (a noodle-based version), and shoofly pie reflect Pennsylvania Dutch traditions. Pierogies and other Eastern European influences show up in western parts of the state, especially around Pittsburgh. The same core foods repeat regionally, with variation coming from preparation style and local preference.
